Building Connections: Between the Content and their Community
As an educator, you are often more than just a “teacher”. You become a mentor, an advisor, and even a parental figure at times. Trips can be a great time to not only make the content real, but help build rapport and relationships with your students by sharing these experiences with them. Teach students that there is more to learning than just in the Classroom. Take them into their environment and expose them to the world of opportunities that surrounds them, and how what they are learning can translate into those opportunities. In New York City, students have all of these amazing institutions, corporations and programs at their fingertips, but without the help of teachers, they may never get to experience them.
I communicate with families of my students and advisors on a weekly basis to provide updates on their progress and successes. In these uncertain times, my engagement with families has increased significantly in an effort to monitor student progress and check in on the health and well-being of my students and their families. Families also have the opportunity to get a look into our class through "Mr. Modeste's Class Website" as well as letters that are sent to homes. Serving as a coach and attending school games has also given me the opportunity to meet student's parents and family in a non-academic environment.
